In my opinion, the 2026 live-action remake of 'Moana' is a disappointment, to say the least. It's a flat, lifeless, and artificial rehash of a beloved animated classic, and I find myself wondering what its purpose is. Personally, I think it's a cynical attempt to milk the last drops of nostalgia from an audience that has long since moved on. What makes this particularly fascinating is the fact that it's the first live-action Disney remake to remake an animation released after the trend began. This oblique record may be the only thing that makes 'Moana' distinct. However, I find it hard to get excited about a movie that feels so perfunctory and lacks any sense of innovation. From my perspective, the movie is a bland, artificial, and forgettable experience. The closest analogue I can conjure is George Lucas' 'Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones', and that's not a compliment. The plot, while familiar, is uninspired and lacks any sense of surprise or new angles. The live-action scenes are few and far between, and the CGI elements are jarring and distracting. One thing that immediately stands out is the lack of chemistry between the lead actors. The dialogue scenes are thuddingly uninspired, and the camerawork is flat and uninteresting. What many people don't realize is that the movie fails to address any of the criticisms or nitpicks that the original film faced. It's like a cover song with worse instrumentation and a different lead singer. The only strikingly original message to come from a live-action Disney remake was from Tim Burton's 'Dumbo', which managed to be a deliberate anti-Disney, anti-corporate-entertainment screed. The 'Moana' remake, however, is just another automated corporate entertainment that lacks any sense of purpose or direction. In my opinion, the movie is a waste of time and resources, and I can't imagine anyone buying its soundtrack or watching it instead of the original. Personally, I think it's a sign that the trend of live-action remakes is finally dying out, and I can only hope that it's the end of the road for this unwelcome trend.
